Henry James and the Play

This article focuses on writer Henry James. Little of value, it must be confessed, is to be found in James' theatrical attempts. Nor does writer Leon Edel, who has patiently exhumed James's plays, make any great claims for them as works of art or potential successes in the theater. As Edel makes clear, James was not at all the usual case of the literary man essaying the theater casually and perhaps a little contemptuously. Turning playwright in earnest about 1890 he could claim a large acquaintance with the medium, for which his respect was unbounded. The theater remained his passion. Highly illusionistic, highly social, highly professional, it was still his art of arts, and as a novelist he continued to profit by its vividnesses and economies.
