Everything that happened during the Whitsuntide week-end in Berlin has been copiously reported by the hundreds of German and foreign newspapermen who crowded Allied and German press headquarters. All the preparations for the great event were successfully carried out. The West's front was guarded by 13,000 West Berlin policemen and 8,000 fully armed Allied soldiers, supported by tanks, aircraft and field guns. East Berlin was garrisoned by 20,000 members of the People's Police and an unknown number of Russian soldiers.
