From the beginning of the Lebanese crisis, this dollar-and-cents factor permeated the situation, and it was obvious that the opposition strategy was to undermine the pro-Western regime of Camille Chamoun by undermining business. Neither public opinion polls, nor even a recent census, exist in Lebanon, but there are handy indicators of the national division. The first thing a Lebanese knows about his fellow is whether he is a Christian or a Moslem. If a Moslem works or lives in a Christian village, he feels inferior or is regarded as such, while a Christian in a Moslem village will tell you right off that he is "better than them."
