This article critically appraises the books "A Prophet in His Own Country," by Kenneth S. Davis and "The New America," by Adlai E. Stevenson. Stevenson symbolized and himself partially wrought a change in American liberalism which has been unnoticed by liberals themselves. Essentially, it has been a change in emphasis and approach, a matter more of style and tone than of program. To pin down the change is a difficult matter for most of us who supported Stevenson. His utterances on the hydrogen bomb, his wit and rhetoric have been interpreted, justifiably, as glorious anomalies in a dismal political period.
