In this article the author, who is the Governor of Michigan since 1949, points out certain challenges to the Democratic Party in context of the Little Rock crisis in Arkansas. According to him, it is certain that the political issues involved with the crisis must concern the Democratic Party in terms of its tradition and spiritual integrity. He suggests that the issue of Little Rock affect the very reason for the party's being. They have to do with whether the U.S. can maintain its free way of life, and indeed, even survive in the world of the twentieth century. This issue raised a question of maintaining law and order by the Constitutional powers and the a question at Democratic Party's objectivity to fight for civil rights.
