Jesus De Galindez, the instructor of Columbia University in New York City, whose disappearance created an international cloak-and-dagger mystery, stands today as a challenging double symbol. To the dictatorial regime in the misnamed Dominican Republic, he is an avenging ghost taking a toll in drastically-cut tourist revenues. To Americans, who still believe in democracy, he is the protagonist of deep-seated and disquieting issues, for the demands of simple justice have revealed the curious fact that many officials and many leaders of society defend, and many more blandly condone, the ruthless dictatorship. And this they do despite a well-exposed web of intrigue and murder.
