Tom Paine the voice of the American Revolution, was vilified during his lifetime far more viciously than, for example, the "atheist" and "Jacobin" Jefferson, and historians have been slow to set the record straight. The first biography of Paine, published in England after the appearance of "The Rights of Man," was commissioned and paid for by his enemies and issued for the express purpose of discrediting him. A second biography, published in the U.S. shortly after his death, was written by one of the shrillest opponents of his ideas in the U.S. For years these two books were the chief source of information about his life.
