Recently new American Secretary of State, Edward R. Stettinius announced that the composition of the Italian government is purely an Italian affair and that the U.S. government expects that Italians would work out their problems along democratic lines without influence from outside. He added that the British government must consult the American government before taking any important step in Italy. Thus, if the British government planned something in Italy which might arouse protest in the U.S., the American government would be able to object in time obtain a change of plan. Moreover, since now that U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt has become the protector of Italian Pope, the U.S. must be consulted when an important question arises in Italy.
