This article presents the author's views the importance that coal plays in Kentucky. But with the spread of surface mining, and exploration for oil and gas has uncovered a vast and mostly untapped fuel reservoir. In fact, a spokesman for the Kentucky Geological Survey was prompted to note, that acre for acre, both the gas and oil deposits in eastern Kentucky are of the same order as those of the Louisiana-Texas Gulf coast. The jump in oil production is the more significant because, by the industry's own accounts, most of the activity has been for natural gas, with oil an auxiliary consideration for the moment.
