An important by-product of the recent trek to Yenan of American army officers, State Department and representatives of the press has been the information obtained about the program and prospects of the anti-fascist movement in Japan. The existence of a group of unorganized democrats is important not so much for the present as for the post-war period, when they can provide much of the political leadership for the new forces which will be released by Japan's military defeat. The best-organized and most effective of the resistance movements is the Communist-led Japanese People's Emancipation League. Having been forced underground in 1928, the Communists have had long experience in illegal activity.
