This article presents information on the book "A Guest of Honour," by Nadine Gordimer. It can appear to be one of those worth-while books that everyone is glad has been written and that no one indeed relishes reading. How an African nation moves from newly acquired independence to the kind of chaos that the news columns gleefully tell people has overcome many, needs explication, all agree, if only because the news, columns explain nothing. The whole firmament of Africa is in this book and Miss Gordimer's knowledge and talent and developed literary skill are at the service of a subject (Africa) and a theme (the corruption of political ideals in individual actions) that brings its own reward to the reader and the writer.
