For years, the consumer has been the "pigeon" for faulty engineering, shoddy workmanship, vague warranties and inept service and his frustrations have finally awakened politicians and governmental agencies to the attractive political aspects of the situation. Legislators are now rushing to the hopper with laws designed to toughen warranties, improve product safety and generally strengthen the consumer's position in dealing with faulty appliances. The buying decision of the customer should be disciplined by the following criteria: the appliance is the one best suited to his needs; the reputation of the dealer; confidence in the brand name; availability of prompt, efficient service; the purchase price and terms are at least competitive; and the method of payment would help insure satisfactory performance.
