This article focuses on various political developments in the U.S. At the California Democratic State Convention in August 1970, Jess Unruft and Representative John V. Tunney kicked off their respective campaigns for governor and U.S. Senator. The sensation of the convention, however, was a statement by Senator Alan Cranston that between 20,000 and 25,000 American soldiers have been killed by South Vietnamese peasants. It is particularly tragic that confrontation violence, whether by police or protesters, so often strikes down persons who were not personally involved in the action. The most recent such victim is Ruben Salazar, killed when a force of 330 deputy sheriffs converged on a mass rally called by Chicanos of East Los Angeles to protest the war in Vietnam. Salazar was news director of KMEX, a Spanish-language television station, and columnist for the newspaper "Los Angeles Times."
