Four times in the course of the film "The Passion of Anna," director Ingmar Bergman stops the action so that one of the actors may break out of character to discuss directly the moral characteristics of the person he or she is playing. Bergman seems to be a perplexing man. He is without question a genius of the screen, no one working today use the camera with greater assurance or eloquence, no one places so personal a stamp upon the look of the world. "The Passion of Anna," again in the island setting that Bergman used for "Shame" and "Hour of the Wolf," is a continuous ravishment of composition, detail and muted, glowing color. The camera moves and works with the simplicity of craftsmanship raised to elegance.
