This article presents information on various political developments in the U.S. It would appear that the American withdrawal from Cambodia, when it occurs, will impose the supreme test on the policy of Vietnamization. The South Vietnamese, who will remain, will then face a situation new to them not defending the Saigon regime against its rivals, but occupying a foreign country in order to prevent the use of its frontier districts by their Vietnamese Communist opponents. U.S. President Richard Nixon is heavily committed to withdrawal, American forces have not encountered massive North Vietnamese resistance. On June 6, 1970 the Los Angeles area was in a state of euphoria. At least such was, the mood of that portion of the city connected with the aerospace industry or, to narrow the statement still further, everybody connected with North American Rockwell Corp. was exceedingly happy. The reason for the jubilation was that North American had been awarded the research and development contract for the B-1 bomber, a contract worth $1.35 billion or $1.8 billion.
