Thomas Hoving writes, in the book of the show: "Harlem on My Mind" is a discussion. It is a confrontation. It is education. It is a dialogue." As a matter of fact, it is an exhibition and might as well try to determine what kind. According to Allon Schoener, who organized the show, it "was conceived as a communications environment --one that parallels our daily lives in which we are deluged with information stimuli." One of the Metropolitan Museum's press releases does not shrink from using the word that Hoving and Schoener prudently skirt, but which was obviously on their minds--multimedia.
