The Coal Mine Health and Safety. Act of 1969 in the U.S. was in tended to make coal mining an occupation safe enough to be undertaken, and to compensate miners already disabled by their work. On November 21 about 500 miners gathered for a hearing in Clay County, Kentucky, to listen to testimony and express their discontent over the administration of the law. One of its chief provisions is the relief of miners who have suffered respiratory impairment known as black lung, front breathing the dust-laden air of deep-pit coal mines; but as the hearing progressed it seemed that it was easier to get the disease than get compensation for it.
