A few days' experience of the new Kennedy Center in Washington soon leads one to conclude that the pleasures it may provide are destined to be primarily aural. No major opera theatre in the Western Hemisphere is as modest in size as the Kennedy Center's 2,334-seat hall, and the resulting visual and acoustical intimacy will surely be counted a gain by performers and listeners alike, if not by impresarios, who are already groaning about the price scales that will be needed to produce adequate grosses.
