Unless I Can Think up an Alternative or Two

This article critically appraises the book "New Information: Notes of a Neolithic Conservative," by Paul Goodman. One must be grateful for Goodman's long-standing independent radicalism. It has the virtues of high intelligence, programmatic resourcefulness, and an ample supply of generosity to adversaries of all camps. The argument in "New Reformation," which is hardly worked out, is that the crisis of the young goes deeper than politics or even moral disaffection. It is a religious crisis generated by the technological dehumanization of American life.
