With films like "The Lost Man," following upon "Up Tight," one may hazard the emergence of a trend to transpose the conditions of the Irish struggle for independence into those of black militancy. One can understand why film makers are attracted by this notion: the parallels work out in a rough sort of way, and the IRA generated some first-class drama that can be given an exhilarating rebirth in the American ghettos. Popular theatre does not operate in a social vacuum, and tensions are already sufficiently high without encouraging a general supposition that the blacks are forming themselves into a national underground army for the purposes of terrorism and the eventual seizure of power.
