The article focuses on the book "The Bamboo Bed," by William Eastlake. The Bamboo Bed is the nickname of a helicopter belonging to the Search and Rescue Squad, which swoops high over the Vietnamese jungle during battle supposedly in search of the wounded and the lost. No one ever gets saved by the Bamboo Bed, except perhaps the love-makers. An image of suspended indifference, the Bamboo Bed captivates everyone's imagination and serves as a fitting emblem for this novel. The Bamboo Bed is not a political novel, hardly even a war novel. It is neither realistic hard-hitting. A brilliant, strange, wondrous performance it is the kind of feather that knocks one over.
