The article presents information on the U.S. inter-city and suburban rail transportation. While Chicago, Philadelphia and Boston are preparing to tear down major portions of their antique elevated lines, plans are under way to run rapid transit trains at third-floor level down the middle of the main street of the charming university town of Berkeley, California. The mayor and the city council are fighting back, but their cause appears doomed. And without any significant protests, the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District also plans to operate elevated line in the middle of streets in two Negro neighborhoods in the adjacent city of Oakland.
