The article focuses on the statement given by Soviet Minister of Culture Yekaterina Furtseva at the 23rd Congress meeting, about conditions created in the country for creative artistic and literary work. She had had, during the previous days, long talks with some of the Western Communist leaders. They acquainted her with the reaction of Italian and French Communist intellectuals to the tough verdict in the Siniavsky-Daniel trial. Speaking a few days before at the Congress, Longo, the Italian leader, had pointedly remarked that the Italian Communist Party firmly stood for cultural freedom. Furtseva alluded to the trial as vaguely as possible.
