This article focuses on two musical performances "Kaddish," by Leonard Bernstein, and "War Requiem," by Benjamin Britten. One must concede that Kaddish does not amount to a significant new composition, but that is just what is most disturbing about the furor with which it has been surrounded, since the critics are led to wonder whether all the moral outrage has not simply been an unjustified outlet for a irritation with Bernstein's other activities as conductor and musical personality. Such a confusion of categories, however, is equally dangerous for music and for responsible criticism whether or not it is directed at a work deserving of really serious consideration.
