Syria: Test of Arab Unity

This article reports on political developments in Syria in context of the unification of the Arab countries from March 1962 till March 1963. After the end of the revolution and the social and economic conditions became normal, there was discussions on unity of Cairo. The unity charter issued at the ends of these talks incorporated some Ba'athist principles and paid attention to merger of Iraq, Syria and Egypt. According to the author, in the present conflict over the form which unity should take, confederation or federation, the Ba'athists ability to handle both Gamal Abdel Nasser, president of Egypt and his supporters among the Syrian working class will be key to survival.
