The second New York newspaper strike within a month shut down the city's nine major newspapers, including two Long Island, New York dailies, last week. A strike by the Newspaper Guild of New York closed the Daily News for eight days during November. Last week's walkout by the printers' union threatened a long strike which; following the national pattern of dwindling dailies, might result in the permanent closing of one or more of New York City's papers. The strike began with a walkout of printers at four of the papers and was followed by a publishers' lockout at the rest. The publishers, sustained in part by strike insurance against revenue losses, presented a firm front to the printers.
