The article presents information on the book "Rebels and Ancestors. The American Novel, 1890-1915. this book is written by Maxwell Geismar Houghton. He deals with the five writers who, in his perspective, marked the beginning of the modern spirit in the national letters are Frank Norris, Stephen Crane, Jack London, Ellen Glasgow and Theodore Dreiser. He ends this volume by promising that he will pursue the quest farther into "the Middle Generation." Geismar quotes in his book that Dreiser was the novelist of this century "who most clearly understood the fundamental change in the social and economic bases of American society."
