The article presents information on crossword puzzles. A little observation soon shows that there is only, one fairly universal form of intellectual activity pursued by at least one person in every second family. And that is crossword puzzles. Since this is indubitably true it is remarkable that the literature on the subject is frivolous, indulgent and cute. To the puzzle-solver, the existence of a perfect answer is guaranteed. In solving his problem, he rises entirely above the real world, where most problems have no perfect answer. Having filled in the last square, he can indulge a small sneer at all the unfinished puzzles around him and perhaps bring to his own real problems some of the puzzler's patience and self-confidence.
