The article focuses on the book "The Mind of Germany," by Hans Kohn. The book centers on the German mind that was formed by the "war against the West," a war waged by German intellectuals and supported by Prussia's ideal of power and her militarism. The war began with the Napoleonic occupation and the turn which romanticism took in Germany. To be sure, there were liberals in Germany, but their liberalism withered when Prussia crushed the revolutions of 1848 in South Germany. Finally, when Bismarck triumphed over Austria, liberals rushed into the waiting arms of the Iron Chancellor All of this formed the German mind.
