The article highlights that it is over Vietnam that the new Soviet-Chinese crisis has come to a head, after a long and intense tug of war behind the scenes While it is broadly true that the Soviet Union stand for moderation and that China argues from revolutionary irreconcilability, the sharpness of the present discord is due to a more specific and more complicated issue which is of crucial importance for the immediate future. Chinese believe that the Vietcong can win the war in South Vietnam by own forces. For this it needs generous aid in munitions, but no Soviet military establishment with thousands of specialists and advisers. Moreover, Moscow and Peking disagree also over the prospects of American escalation in Vietnam.
