It is a long-standing tradition, in a profession, which treats tradition with reverence, that doctors in training should not earn a living. The first years of practice have always been looked on simply as apprenticeships, whose reward is the honor of administrating to the sick and the expectancy of rich harvest years soon to come. In return for post-graduate training and practical instruction which cannot be gotten in any other way, the young doctor must perform, in addition to important medical duties, any ancillary work the hospital sees fit to assign him.
