All eyes are fixed on the impending battle for the Senate seat of Massachusetts, vacated by the U.S. President John F. Kennedy. Benjamin A. Smith, an obscure mayor of Gloucester with the important qualification of having served as the Presidents roommate at Harvard, was appointed to the Senate until this year, when an election will fill the seat for the last two years of the term. Apparently, Smith was picked with the understanding that he would step aside at the end of two years so that Edward M. Kennedy, youngest brother of the President, if he so desired, could run for the seat. Edward is an assistant District Attorney of Massachusetts.
