The article focuses on the social and cultural life of Vienna, Austria. The author says that behind the facade of prosperity, the majority of Viennese live in very humble circumstances. A private bathroom is still a great luxury. Partly because rents are low, landlords refuse to modernize the old houses. Wages are also very low, and while workers are some what compensated by various forms of social insurance, the pinch is painful for the mass of small officials and intellectuals. But worse than the material hardships is the cultural sterility of the city once renowned as a center of ideas and art.
