This article describes the social status of American Indians in the U.S. After the recent incident of the ouster of the commissioner of Indian Affairs in the U.S. coupled with a U.S. Senate committee report in which it is charged that the Bureau of Indian Affairs is more interested in perpetuating its hold on Indians and their property than in bringing them into the mainstream of American life, the Indians look anxiously about, wondering who their friends are and from what quarter to expect an assault. Attacks against the bureau in and out of Congress have been used to obscure efforts to gain access to Indian property or to diminish Indian legal rights.
