The article presents information on archaeology. Man has always speculated about his origins; some part of his thoughts has ever turned toward his creation and the reasons for his being. Even those societies which officially deny religion honor "folklore" and "cultural orientation" and spend much money and effort to trace their history. The number of people conducting research in archaeology, ethnology and social anthropology in the more advanced Soviet republics is a constant surprise to visitors from the West. Modern life and thought seem to demand a growing knowledge of what man did and built and considered important in the past.
