The article presents a case which offers a disturbing of the direction in which the bureaucratized trade union is heading. Fred Ferrara, president of the 10,000-member Restaurant Employees' Local 11 in New York City, signed a contract covering 4,00 employees of restaurant chains in New York and New Jersey. The discharge section of the contract permits the employer to fire any employee at any time, without notice to the union or to the employee, for such causes as gross insubordination or offensive language or conduct, and which permits the employer to dismiss any employee for any reason whatever upon twenty-four hour notice to the union.
