The former U.S. Vice president Richard M. Nixon seems to have offered Alger Hiss an opportunity to demand of the courts the release of the grand jury minutes that led to his indictment. Hiss has been charged of passing government documents to Communist spy Whittaker Chambers. Hiss has always denied passing any documents, but he had been unable to explain how Chambers had obtained documents that apparently had been typed on his old Woodstock. Among the many mysterious aspects of this mysterious case, this is now the most mysterious. Not just the guilt or innocence of Alger Hiss, but the quality of American justice is at stake in his issue.
