John Osborne play "Luther," has caused a certain stir in London for a number of reasons. Unfortunately, the play itself is not the most important of these reasons. For one thing, it seems to have been hoisted into public attention by its author's capacity for getting himself talked about in the papers as much as by its own dramatic power. "Luther," though quite a poor play, is strong. But too much of the strength comes from history, biography and Luther's own words; too little from Osborne's imagining the character. That is to say, the importance of the Luther whom people watch and to whom people listen derives too much from the actual leader Martin Luther.
