On November 8, 1961, a delegation of distinguished the U.S. people, headed by Clarence Pickett of the American Friends Service Committee, presented a national clemency petition on behalf of Frank Wilkinson and Carl Braden to Attorney General Robert Kennedy. The petition was signed by over 3000 persons from forty-eight states, including more than 300 clergymen, 500 university teachers and scores of public figures, college presidents, editors, trade-union leaders, publishers, writers and businessmen. Braden, a field secretary for the Southern Conference Educational Fund and the editor of its newspaper, the "Southern Patriot," had devoted himself to the cause of racial integration for many years before his conviction.
