This article focuses on the work of Bertolt Brecht in the field of theater. The Polish theatre encountered Brecht in 1952, during the peak of the Stalinist period when the Berliner Ensemble visited Warsaw with three plays. These were "Mother Courage," "The Mother and Kleist's," and "The Broken Pitcher." For the Polish theatre, which had become paralyzed by the use of Stanislavski's naturalistic doctrines, this visit was a revelation within the framework of officially accepted art, greater possibilities seemed to exist. The visit provoked a heated discussion of Brecht's work, with the official criticism taking a strong stand against him, designating him an expressionist-symbolist-pacifist.
