This article focuses on the Republican National Convention of 1968 at Miami Beach, Florida after the Republican party nominated Richard M. Nixon as their presidential candidate. Next morning Nixon stunned much of the convention city with the announcement that Governor Spiro T. Agnew of Maryland would be his running mate. Unpopular in his own state and a politician of the old school, Agnew is a suicidal choice whose selection was received with disbelief in the Nelson A. Rockefeller camp. Nixon, true to form, had chosen another Bill Miller, who might placate many of the Southern states, but would hardly help in the all-important industrial Northeast.
