The Ford Foundation has made notable contributions to American television programming. For several years, it has kicked in $6 million annually as two-thirds of the support for National Educational Television, the country's chief noncommercial production and distribution organization. In the 1950's, it subsidized "Omnibus," an experimental cultural series telecast for several years on the commercial networks, and at times sponsored. Now the foundation is the sole support of the Public Television Laboratory (PBL), another experimental series designed to demonstrate the capabilities of public television. Judging by the premiere on November 5, 1967, PBL has amended the original concept Fred W. Friendly had of it as a live news program.
