Shortly after the arrest in Athens, Greece, of Dr. Andreas Papandreou, Professors Robert Clements and Stephen Rousseas of New York University, New York City, New York, formed, with 700 colleagues, the American-Canadian University Committee for Papandreou. A copy of the first circular letter of this committee fell into the hands of a Brigadier Stylianos Pattakos, one of the three oligarchs who seized power and prevented the May elections, which promised to give Papandreou a leading role in the Center Union government. After obtaining the letter, addressed exclusively to administrators and professors in the United States and Canada, Pattakos on June 17 wrote the following reply to Clements and Rousseas, releasing it to the Greek international press even before mailing it to New York.
