The article focuses on the journalist Oswald Garrison Villard. Villard always wanted to be effective as a crusading journalist. It has been said that Villard, "the greatest monographer on what's wrong with the world," suffered a lifetime of disappointments as the champion of lost causes. Villard always suffered from the quaint conceit that law and morality were inseparable or, at least, should be. Villard had his shortcomings, his blind spots and ultimately his loss of insight. But it is to his credit that Villard never confused the role of the journalist with that of the "practical politician." Villard always wanted much more than most of his contemporaries were willing to settle for.
