The article focuses that in the past few months there has been a rash of articles about the transportation problems in the United States. Except for airline crashes, transportation ordinarily rates about as much publicity as the manufacture of bathtubs. The fact that it has been receiving such widespread attention must, therefore, be due to some rather pressing reasons. Overselling the automobile has gone hand in hand with the suburban boom made possible by the presumed flexibility of automobile travel. But as people continue to flock to the suburbs, they get no relief from their dependence on autos. Rarely are new public carrier services added. Consequently, the actual usefulness of owning one, two or even three cars, declines.
