The article presents information on U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson's administration. President Johnson was personally committed to the men who held them, for the politics of interest places a higher premium on loyalty to men than it does on fidelity to position. It was not long, therefore, before defense of policy and defense of men coincided, and Johnson him self, despite his training in the school of compromise, grew almost into a caricature of the anti-Communist ideologue. Once that happened, the Great Society was doomed.
