Self-conscious "profundity" and the search for a special "American" sensibility that engaged many of the composers before the war seems, in retrospect, to have led to a rather sad waste of some good creative impulses. One gets the impression that a great deal of this music was composed under the naive assumption that a distinctive manner of expression is the only necessary condition of musical significance and originality. Consequently, not much attention was paid to the necessities of finding solutions to the internal problems of continuity and style, and this, ironically, delayed for a long time the development of a school of American composition that could be taken seriously as such.
