Probably one of the most striking disease phenomena in the past twenty-year has been the marked increase in mortality from lung cancer in the United States and elsewhere. In attempting to uncover possible agents, it seemed natural to study inhalants such as tobacco smoke. Several studies have indicated differences between cigarette smokers and nonsmokers. Those with responsibilities for the public health have reviewed the evidence and believe that it is most reasonably interpreted as indicating that cigarette smoking is a major causative factor in the increasing incidence of lung carcinoma.
