For those who have long since abandoned the Metropolitan Opera as anything more than a museum operation, the musical-theatre season's most disappointing event to date was not the choice of director Francesco Cilea's tedious musico-theatrical production "Adriana Lecouvreur," as the museum's first showing; this merely confirmed a suspicion that the curators are wanting in taste. It was, rather, the choice of director Charles Gounod's musico-theatrical production "Faust," to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the New York City, New York, Opera, which evoked an unwelcome suggestion that Lincoln Center's smaller company is now placing more emphasis on the museum repertory than on its past reputation for broadening, the musico-theatrical experiences of New York audiences.
