American painting achieved international status in the 1950's, as a result of work begun in the late forties. American art done earlier in the century, aside from a contribution to Dadaism, was generally regarded as provincial. There were two ways of being provincial: one was to use strongly American subject matter, and the other was to use European styles as a model. However, the dominance of American art in the sixties has increased native confidence to the point at which the disreputable early phases are being revived respectfully. The thirties are in process of rehabilitation and one sign of this is the exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art called "The 1930s: Painting and Sculpture in America."
